What vaccinations does my pet need?
Vaccinations need to be given on an individual basis. In general, puppies need more frequent vaccines than adults. Each city and county has its own regulations on rabies vaccination requirements, varying from one to three years. Your best plan is to discuss possible options for your pet with Dr. Melanie or Dr. Emily.

Should my pet be spayed or neutered?
Not only does spaying or neutering your pet keep down the unwanted pet population, it also prevents future serious health problems. Unspayed, older female cats and dogs can develop mammary cancer or pyometra (infected uterus). Older, male dogs can develop testicular cancer, chronic prostatitis or perianal adenomas. All of the above conditions require immediate surgical intervention which can be serious and costly. Unneutered male cats can have undesirable behaviors such as urine spraying and aggression toward other cats and people. Thus, spaying or neutering your pet is a sound medical decision.

Do we need to have our dog treated for heart worm disease in Colorado?
Heartworm disease has become a serious problem in several areas of Colorado. Also, each year some dogs that have never left the Castle Rock area contract heartworm disease. This disease is transmitted by mosquitoes, so if you live in an area where mosquitoes are prevalent, you should have your dog tested and start the preventative medication.

 Do pets suffer from allergies?
Many pets do have allergies. They can suffer from food, contact, or inhalant allergies just like people. Many dogs exhibit allergies by licking or scratching. They will also rub their faces or backs on the carpet or grass. Cats often will have watery eyes or sneeze alot. They will also scratch themselves alot around the neck and ears. If your pet has any of these signs they should be checked by Dr. Melanie or Dr. Emily.

What should I do if my pet is vomiting or has diarrhea?
If the vomiting is occurring even when your pet drinks, it needs to be seen quickly. If it is just an occasional problem, document the circumstances associated with the vomiting to better help diagnose the problem. With diarrhea often blood and mucous will be present. Don't panic, this is very common in pets. If the diarrhea doesn't clear up after one day of no food you should contact Dr. Melanie or Dr. Emily.

Why is my old cat drinking a lot of water, wetting the litter box more, and losing weight?
If your older cat is exhibiting any of these signs, it needs a complete physical as well as blood work and urinalysis. Older cats can suffer from diabetes, renal failure or hyperthyroidism, so these tests can determine the correct course of treatment.

What can I do to keep my senior dog healthy?
A good quality diet, moderate exercise, lots of attention and love go along way to keep senior dogs in good health. We recommend a yearly blood test and urinalysis to find medical problems before they become serious. A lot of older dogs have some lameness problems so radiographs and a special lameness exam may be necessary. There are many new treatments for arthritis, hip, and back problems. The earlier these problems are diagnosed, the less the damage and pain to your dog.
